Issue 16 | April 2008

This month we will be looking at the family tree of h. 'Gold Standard', one of our recommended top ten classic hosta cultivars as listed in the March issue.
H. 'Gold Standard' has produced a number of sports, some of which have also produced sports. The following H. 'Gold Standard' family tree is based upon those we have in our collection so the tree is not a definitive list of the sports that exist. It is an illustration of the way in which some hostas can go on to influence the development of future introductions.

H. 'Gold Standard' was registered as a sport of h. 'Fortunei Hyacinthina Variegata' by P Banyai in 1976, the year we began collecting hostas.

Gold Standard
h. 'Gold Standard'

Mound size: 36" wide x 20" tall
Leaves: 6-8" long x 4-5" wide.
Creamy yellow centres surrounded by dark green margins. The leaf centres are albescent turning from chartreuse to yellow then fading through to ivory as the season progresses.
Flowers: pinkish lavender from mid July to mid August.
In 1993 it was the winner of the Alex J. Summers Distinguished Merit Hosta Award and justifiably so, as it has been the source of a number of lovely sports as our illustration below shows. If no registration year is listed the cultivar has yet to be registered.

Did you know... Harrogate Spring Flower Show: 24-27th April
We are now preparing for our first show of the season. If you would like us to bring orders to the show for collection then let us know by Monday 14th April.

Reorganising our collection
Due to the ever-expanding nature of our collection we needed to build new benches and reorganise the collection - according to size.
This has now been completed and the labelling system is about to go in.

We thought it looked a bit like racing fencing at this stage without the plants to hide all the structure (click on the images to see more detail):

We have found a home for all the varieties currently in the collection but we will probably need to expand the tunnel further at the end of the year.
